Workers Compensation Specialist

Offered by Extended Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno in partnership with the National Registry of Workers’ Compensation Specialists, the Workers’ Compensation Specialist Program provides instruction in workers’ compensation and employers’ liability insurance, and culminates in the national Registered Workers’ Compensation Specialist (RWCS) exam. Professionals from a wide range of industries will benefit from this in-depth program, especially those working in human resources, health care, insurance, law and related fields. Course topics include an overview of the workers’ compensation marketplace, the various methods by which workers’ compensation insurance is purchased in individual states, alternatives to insurance, the ins-and-outs of workers’ compensation experience rating, how employee leasing affects workers’ compensation requirements, and how medical cost containment works to reduce workers’ compensation insurance costs. Certification Requirements To earn the Registered Workers’ Compensation Specialist (RWCS) designation, candidates must successfully complete the University’s Workers’ Compensation Specialist Program and earn a score of 70 percent or higher on the 50-question, multiple-choice RWCS certification exam administered at the end of the second day of the program. When these requirements have been met, the National Registry of Workers’ Compensation Specialists (NRWCS) awards a diploma and the RWCS designation. In order to maintain the RWCS designation, program graduates are required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of continuing education in workers’ compensation every three years, and to uphold the NRWCS code of ethics.
