This is a hands-on course utilizing an interactive workshop approach. Instruction will consist of lecture, discussion, group activities and role play/practice interpretation for educational, medical and legal settings. This course is designed to give students the opportunity for skill development so they may be able to perform basic community interpretation. Students working in a variety of industries, including education, legal, medical, tourism and hospitality, will benefit from this course.
Students must be fluent in Spanish and English, and must have taken the Introduction to Community Interpreting course.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate ability to manage interpreting effectively during educational, medical and legal encounters
- Learn the skills needed to perform basic consecutive and simultaneous interpretation and sight translation for medical appointments, school conferences/IEPs and out-of-court legal interpretation
- Develop interpreting skills (note-taking and memory exercises)
- Identify ways to improve knowledge of medical, educational and legal terminology in Spanish and English
